Old Potrero Rye Whiskey is a bold homage to the original artisanal whiskeys of America, a testament to the power of the pioneering spirit and the celebrated return of pot-distilled whiskey in the United States. Since 1993, the whiskey has been distilled in small copper pot stills at the San Francisco-based distillery.
The Old Potrero Single Barrel Reserve Toasted Barrel Rye Whiskey is aged in extra fine-grain American oak. The wood is air-dried for 24 months, and the barrels are fully toasted by hand over an oak fire. The 100% malted rye mash is fermented for four days and then double-distilled in traditional copper pot whiskey stills.
From Lee Diaz, Topflight Series Panel Member:
Old Potrero has continued redefining the range of flavors that can be developed using rye grains. Not only is the mash bill for this whiskey 100% Rye, but the rye grain used here is malted and then fermented for four days before being distilled in copper pot stills. Having taken notes from Anchor Brewing and led by distillers with a history in brewing conventions, the releases from Old Potrero are uniquely West Coast—and everyone should pay attention.
As our second Old Potrero selection, we intentionally picked a fundamentally different barrel from the first. This barrel comes to you with a whiskey aged for just over 8 years in a hand-toasted barrel. The resulting flavors are dynamic and offer a range of flavors I have not experienced in a rye ever before. On the nose, you will discover oolong tea, mint, stone fruit, vanilla, and a hint of citrus. This leads you to flavors of maltiness and rye spice with umami, rosemary, dark fruit, finished oak. This pour ends delightfully with a lingering finish of sage, honey, white pepper, and leather. It is truly a masterclass in what you can do with malted rye.
