Freemark Abbey has held exclusive sourcing rights to Rutherford’s Bosché Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon red wine for over 45 years, starting with a 1970 handshake deal between winery partner Chuck Carpy and John Bosché. Bosché Vineyard cuttings were used to plant Heitz’s Martha’s Vineyard, which produced Napa’s first single-vineyard Cabernet; Freemark Abbey’s Bosché Vineyard Cabernet was the second. Staying true to its historic roots, this dark ruby red wine is flavor-intense, enjoyable now, or can be properly cellared for 20-30 years of enjoyment.
For over half a century, Napa Valley has enjoyed a reputation interchangeable with premium wine. It has gained this reputation for its wine grapes in California for a reason: the amazing complexity that skilled winemakers can coax out of it when grown in optimum locations. They know all about this in the great, old chateaux of Bordeaux, as well as at many younger, but equally prestigious, wineries in Napa Valley. The world’s best wine grapes are grown in these respective regions.
The Bosché Vineyard is a small 22-acre vineyard located on the famed Rutherford Bench in Napa Valley. The vineyard's deep gravelly soils create a natural area to grow Bordeaux varietals with dry farming or minimal drip irrigation. A seasonal creek that crosses the vineyard indicates the high water table in the spring, providing water and nutrients. As the onset of fruit ripening approaches the water table drops, stressing the wines and intensifying the dark velvety fruit flavors.
