No distillery matches the complexity and depth of Laphroaig. Intense smoke, salt from the sea, echoes of sweetness. Each cask tells a story steeped in flavor and craft. This Laphroaig 2014 Pedro Ximenez Hogshead Single Cask combines peat and oakiness with a sweeter, heavier sherry flavor. Rich notes of dried fruit, sweet licorice, and spicy ginger round out the experience.
From Lee Diaz, Topflight Series Panel Member:
PX sherry casks are truly the darling for aging and finishing whisk(e)y. They brilliantly round out whiskey that is a bit rough around the edges. And in the the case of this Laphroaig, they add a dynamic to this whisky that is a brilliant balance of savory and sweet. Unlike the previous cask, which is sweet forward followed by spoke, this one is bbq savory followed by sweet nuances. The two barrels together can provide a broad masterclass on what Laphroaig can offer — add a bottle of 10YO and you will have quite an unforgettable flight.
The nose of Laphroaig Single Cask Pedro Ximenez is peaty and smoky, with notes of oak and vanilla. On the palate, it is sweet and complex, with flavors of dried fruit, caramel, and dark chocolate complemented by the signature smokiness of Laphroaig whisky. The finish is long and warming, with a hint of sea salt and a touch of spice. It is a powerful and intense whisky that is best enjoyed neat or with a splash of water to open up the flavors to explore the full range of nuance that this pour offers.
