Matanzas Creek Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc
Beyond the Label
Winery NotesSourced from the beautiful and diverse Sonoma County, this Sauvignon Blanc white wine is harvested in the first weeks of September. After arriving to the winery, the grapes are loaded into the press and either immediately pressed or allowed to sit on the skins for a determined amount of time. After soaking, grapes are pressed, and juice is sent to stainless steel tank to settle for two days. The clarified juice undergoes fermentation in stainless steel tank or neutral oak to ferment. After fermentation, the resulting wine is aged for a several months until they are ready for bottling.
Tasting NotesThis white wine has aromas of fresh pineapple, white lily, jasmine, and passion fruit. It has flavors of honeydew melon, peach, and citrus blossom. It is light on the palate but flavor dense.
Vintage Notes2020 was a year to remember. Heat waves, minimal rainfall le most California canopies with less fruit than expected. is gave the vines a chance to produce smaller clusters of fruit of a higher quality. Proving that even in the hardest of times beauty, elegance, and power can blossom.
Vineyard NotesWith four decades of winemaking heritage, Matanzas Creek’s expertise in Sauvignon Blanc dates to the beginning, when founding winemaker Merry Edwards developed her signature style. The winery has a rich history of industry leadership, including launching the careers of many renowned California winemakers, producing pioneering research on clonal significance, and spearheading the founding of the Bennett Valley AVA. Since its start in 1977, Matanzas Creek has left an indelible mark on the California wine industry. Today, the aromatic expertise of winemaker Marcia Torres-Forno, experience in Chile, Napa, and Sonoma, shines through in each bottle. Achieving the signature delicacy in all of Matanzas Creek’s wines requires strict attention to detail. Timing of the pick in the vineyards is determined by grape hue signaling aromas of the fruit, which are then cultivated in the cellar with careful selection of fermentation vessel types. Matanzas Creek wines are sourced from the optimal growing sites for each offering. The wines are always crafted to express a profound sense of place, and delicately woven into the portfolio with a common thread of simple elegance.
Winemaking NotesOur Knights Valley vineyard is a mature vineyard that was planted with Clone 1 and Musque Sauvignon Blanc. e Musque clone, when picked early, develops a strong white ower and citrus blossom aroma. For the past four decades, Matanzas Creek Winery has focused on creating site-expressive wines. roughout the years, our initiatives have remained the same: employ a range of vineyard clones, utilize a variety of fermentation vessels, and explore vineyard techniques to produce thoughtfully craed, balanced wines. e evolution is within us and in the vines - which translates to grace and greater expression in our wines.
