Grander Rum is a single-origin rum. Distilled, aged, and bottled in Panama using locally grown sugarcane. This particular single barrel is a 10-year-old rum finished 11 months in Panama in a first-fill ex-bourbon whiskey barrel. The whiskey barrel was sourced from a distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, used to age a 10-year-old bourbon. This single barrel was bottled uncut and unfiltered.
From Lee Diaz, Topflight Series Panel Member:
For me, rum from Panama seemed like a completely new venture. I was not entirely sure if I have had Panamanian rum before, and after a little web sleuthing, I realized that this was only the second time that I might have. My immediate reaction: WOW. Now that we've gotten past that moment, let's dig into what it's incredible.
This Grander Rum Single Barrel is called “The Oaks” because it goes through two ex-bourbon barrel aging processes. The first is a full 10-years in an ex-bourbon American White Oak barrel, it is then moved to a second barrel for an additional 11-months — this barrel aged a favorite bourbon in Lawrenceburg, KY before giving this bourbon some love. The result is a glorious complex rum full of depth and flexible enough to be enjoyed near, on a rock or in your favorite rum-forward cocktail.
On the nose, you're greeted by those whimsical tropical flavors of florals, pineapple, maple syrup, clove and toasted oak. On the palate, you'll discover caramel, banana, vanilla cake, and candied berries. The finish has oak, marshmallow, graham cracker, milk chocolate and coconut. Yes, it's like your favorite s'more that you've toasted just to that right char. It's a beautiful pour that is wonderfully impacted by its age and finish.
