This Peated Malt whiskey is a variation on our house style made from a mash of peated malt that is among the smokiest in the world. We combine that with a variety of malt-focused spirits that together create a single malt whiskey that encompasses a wide spectrum of peaty and smoky flavors without dominating the palate. The peat character is sturdy enough to satisfy the cravings of those looking for a solid dose of smoke, while malt-focused mash bills contribute grainy and fruity notes that round out the whiskey. Westland’s Peated Malt is filled primarily into new American oak and 1st-fill used American oak, resulting in a multi-dimensional and balanced peated single malt whiskey.
Westland’s single malt is completely approachable in light of its merits. The Peated expression has won countless awards, its critical acclaim, a further testament to the quality of this distinguished expression.

American Single Malt Whiskey Commission:
Westland has also founded and funded an organization designed to establish, promote and protect the category of American Single Malt Whiskey as a whole. The American Single Malt Whiskey Commission is rooted in the consumer and education. Today, it counts over 50 Member Producers and an equal number of trade supporters. Westland Distillery is actively developing trade programs to advance the mission and are working with several other organizations to earn a formal definition with our Federal Government. That lobbying effort will officially recognize the term American Single Malt Whiskey with a formal, legal Standard of Identity.

“We want to take these things and push them in a new direction. We're playing by the same rules as they do in Scotland—it's the same four ingredients—but there's so much that's untapped. We do not want to replicate what they do. We want to express our own time, place and culture and create an authentically American single malt.” - Matt Hofmann, Co-Founder
At the heart of the distillery's house style is a barley bill that includes five exceptional roasted and kilned barley malts, the base of which is pale malt grown right in the State of Washington. The inspiration for this recipe that includes (Munich Malt, Extra Special Malt, Pale Chocolate Malt and Brown Malt) came from the rich brewing culture of the Pacific Northwest. These malts are mashed together then fermented with a Belgian brewer’s yeast for 144 hours. The whiskey is then distilled through Westland’s copper-pot stills and matured in a combination of Cooper's Select New American Oak, Cooper's Reserve New American Oak, and first fill ex-bourbon barrels.
