The Penner-Ash Estate Vineyard is located in the northern part of the Willamette Valley, in the Yamhill-Carlton sub-AVA. Founding duo, Lynn and Ron Penner-Ash, were inspired to plant the southeast facing hillside in part due to its proximity to Shea Vineyard, one of Oregon’s most prized sites. Soil surveys were used to choose rootstocks and Pinot Noir clones by block to optimize the unexpected soil diversity on the 15 planted acres at the property. Clone 114 was planted on sedimentary soil for spiciness, Clone 115 on volcanic soil to bring red bright fruit, as well as the Pommard for mouthfeel and texture. Dijon 667 and 777 throughout the vineyard bring red and black fresh fruit notes.

In 1998, Lynn and Ron Penner-Ash founded Penner-Ash Wine Cellars in the Northern Willamette Valley’s Yamhill-Carlton AVA. The pair built their LIVE certified sustainable gravity-flow winery surrounded by an 15-acre Estate Vineyard. The building seems to spring from the land itself – a reflection of the values, spirit and winemaking philosophy of Penner-Ash. The wines reflect the Willamette Valley’s distinct textures, flavors and terroir, with beautiful elegance and balance. Decades-long relationships with grower neighbors and friends provide access to fruit from the region’s most distinguished vineyards, including Shea Vineyard, Bramble Hill Vineyard, and Zena Crown Vineyard. Grounded in these partnerships, filled with respect and admiration for this land, Penner-Ash Pinot Noirs are lush and inviting – a textural experience from start to finish.

Lynn Penner-Ash began her career in the Willamette Valley with Rex Hill Vineyards in 1998, as one of the first female winemakers in Oregon. As a pioneer in the Willamette Valley, Lynn built the foundation of her legacy as a ‘master blender’ of the Willamette Valley AVA, and an early champion of the region’s promise. Today, she works side by side with Winemaker Kate Ayres, who has been entrusted to carry forward the longstanding relationships with grower neighbors and friends that Lynn has fostered over the past twenty years. In the winery, Lynn and Kate focus on small-lot indigenous yeast fermentation with extended cold soaks to extract a rich, fruit-focused, textured mouthfeel. Each lot is vinified separately then artistically crafted into single vineyard wines, as well as blended to create the flagship Penner-Ash wine, the Willamette Valley Pinot Noir.
