Origins

Rock & Rye is considered America’s Original Bottled Cocktail and its roots stretch back to the early 1800s when barkeeps in saloons would serve a shot of rye whiskey, often unaged and unpalatable to many, with a small bowl of rock candy which could be added by the customer to take the edge off. It was even sold at pharmacy counters as a cure-all for coughs, colds, sore throats, bronchitis and anything that ails.
