Cigalus, a place created from the passion and the intuition of Gérard Bertrand,  is the root of our story and our move towards biodynamic agriculture. With the purchase of Domaine de Cigalus in 1995, Gérard Bertrand finally found the terroir he had been searching for. A terroir where noble grape varieties, both red and white, can express themselves in an exceptional and original way while still preserving a Mediterranean authenticity, the very identity of Languedoc wines.

Domaine de Cigalus is the result of a desire to create a viticultural world apart. The Mediterranean influence of the area is reflected in the estate’s name. The vines totally surrounding the property only add to the magic and unique aspect of this estate. It was here that Gérard Bertrand decided to adopt biodynamic methods, and in 2010 the estate was awarded the Demeter label for certification of biodynamic agriculture.

ORIGINS

Since the autumn of 2002, part of the vineyard has been run using biodynamic methods. In order to achieve this result, we make sure to respect 2 fundamental principles: yield control and optimal maturity. To Achieve yield control we use vines over 15 years old with green harvesting methods including short pruning and no mineral nitrogenous fertilization. For optimal maturity, we perfect the sanitary state by sorting grapes if necessary, with classic maturity control which is doubled by analyses on polyphenols, and finally by the daily tasting of the berries from each plot to determine the harvest date. The wines are put into new 225L barrels after the end of the alcoholic fermentation and before the malolactic fermentation, racking and blending. A selection of coopers is made in order to adapt the choice of wood origins and the type of toasting to each vintage. The wine is kept for a minimum of 1 year in the bottle before it is marketed.
