Origins

The story begins in 1849 at the rue Saint-Laud in Angers, France, when Edouard-Jean and Adolphe Cointreau first opened the doors to their distillery. The visionary brothers saw the unfulfilled need for naturally flavored higher-quality liqueurs and embraced the new challenge.

By 1875, Edouard Cointreau, the son of Edouard-Jean, realized his childhood dream and joined the family distillery with his wife, Louisa. Edouard had noticed consumers' interest in the taste of oranges, a very rare and precious commodity at the time. After several years of relentless research and experimentation, Edouard succeeded in creating a perfectly balanced, crystalline liqueur that's three times more concentrated in flavor yet less sweet than the liqueurs of the time. His passion gave birth to the original triple sec, known today as Cointreau.

At the World's Fair in Paris in 1889, Cointreau claimed the first of many awards dedicated to the unconventional French spirit. Soon, recognition came from all over the globe.

In 1893, Cointreau medaled at the World's Fair in Chicago, marking the brand's debut in the Americas. Ever since its birth, Cointreau has won more than 300 international awards.

Today, Cointreau is at the heart of more than 500 of the world's most celebrated cocktails, while the 6th generation of the founder's family represented by Alfred Cointreau is still active in the living heritage of the House of Cointreau.
