Black Art – a series of cuvees, each one a personal selection of very special casks from all corners of our warehouses – casks that only distillers the caliber of Jim Mcewan and now his successor Adam Hannett could keep track of in their minds ledger. Casks that demanded to be watched, the assemblage of which would never be divulged. This is the distillers secret. This fifth incarnation of the now legendary Black Art is as enigmatic as ever, the composition of casks a mystery to all but its creator.

- Fifth in a limited edition series—12,000 individually numbered bottles
- 24-years-old
- Un-peated Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky
- Cask strength of 48.4%
- Solely conceived, distilled, bottled, and matured on the remote Scottish island of Islay.

All Bruichladdich whisky is bottled naturally, un-chill filtered and with no added color. This retains the vital natural oils which give our spirit its complex flavor profile and mouthfeel. Our whiskies are governed by the human senses – sight, sound and smell. Using only Victorian equipment, there are no computers, no technicians in white coats, but over a century of combined experience in our team of artisans and a faith in the equipment our predecessors installed and which still runs today. Our barley farmers are our partners rather than suppliers. They tell us about the soil, the wind, the drainage, the aspect, the micro-climate of every field. We are the only major distiller to bottle spirit on the island itself. We believe this is essential for provenance and authenticity.

Bottle Size: 750ml

Notes of Scent & Flavor

  • On the nose

Lavish fruit notes of cherry, mango, apricot, damson and a warming orange citrus all swathed in an oak blanket of soft brown sugar, vanilla and figs dipped in syrup.
  • On the palate

Damson, mango, pineapple, melon straw- berry, plum and apricot. one after the other they weave in and out of focus on your palate while the structure of the oak gives honey, tobacco, vanilla and hints of spicy cinnamon
  • Finish

Light stone fruits and a cream texture are a delight with a perfect balance of oak, malt and fruit.

“Just before Jim Mcewan retired in 2015, he took me to one side and handed me his recipe for the next iteration, Black Art 5. It was an emotional moment, the handing over of responsibility of one of the greatest drams we’ve ever created. I have to say I took the recipe from Jim’s hand and dutifully ignored it. This had to be my Black Art.” - Adam Hannett, Head Distiller

Origins

Bruichladdich is an award-winning distillery employing generations of distilling knowledge and the principle of minimal intervention.

Built in 1881 on the wild Scottish island of Islay, our distillery still uses the original Victorian equipment to create a range of single malt whiskies that are trickle distilled, matured and bottled solely on Islay by a skilled team of 78 men and women.

Bruichladdich implements revolutionary, modern interpretations of time-honored ideas and challenges the comfortable conventions of a whisky establishment. Rejecting the onset of modern automation and homogenization, our Head Distiller, Adam Hannett, only considers production methods that place the quality of liquid above everything else.

Diversity starts in the field. Provenance is key. We believe the interaction of man, land, soil and climate is paramount. We value our farmer relationships, reconnecting that lost cycle between farmer and distiller -- land and spirit.
